Pride & Prejudice

InDesign | Illustrator | Casebinding

One of Caitlin’s capstone projects in college was choosing a favorite book and creating a limited edition version. This included choosing a target demographic to design for, finding and cleaning an electronic text file, typesetting the book, and finally hand binding the final book. She worked with Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen to create a beautiful, one-of-a-kind novel.

After creating a “publishing house” logo and the title page in Illustrator, Caitlin worked heavily in InDesign to typeset the 300 page document. Once complete, she purchased paper samples from suppliers to determine the right color stock and then printed the book on a Konica Minolta C1100 digital press. She choose the 80lb Butcher White Dur-O-Tone paper from French Paper Company as the paper stock.

Once printed, Caitlin hand sewed the signatures to form the book block. She then picked out the endsheet paper and linen to use for the case cover. After a three-knife trim, she glued the endsheets onto the book block and casebound the book block into the cover. With an added ribbon and charm sewn to the cover, the book was completed.
